Experience Loire - The Brenne

The Brenne National Park With over a thousand lakes, the Brenne is one of the most important fish farming regions of France. The Park itself was created in 1989 to preserve this exceptional "natural" heritage, however it is actually man-made, the first lakes being created by monks in the middle ages!

A terrific area for viewing birdlife, the Brenne is also home to a rich range of flora, numerous species of insects and stunning dragonflies and France's most important population of European Pond Tortoises.

There are over 100 marked walks ranging from 6 to 32km that can be followed from the maps available from local Tourist offices and there are hides open to the public and guided walks and tours including some with English speaking guides.

There are eleven marked circuits for cycle rides which can be a great way of seeing the Brenne with flat roads and very little traffic. Horse riding and canoeing are also available.
